How Long Does It Take To Get Divorced in Florida?

Thu Feb 5, 2026 Divorce

First, the law requires a minimum cooling-off period, which is 20 days. Sometimes people rush into divorce, and the legislature created this cooling-off period to potentially change their minds and salvage their relationship. So, even if the parties have entered into a full agreement, resolving all issues, they cannot get divorced within 20 days.

Most Divorces Are Settled Out of Court

95% of disputes are resolved by an agreement entered into by the parties at some point during the litigation. Typically, after the parties have exchanged certain financial disclosures and if both parties are in agreement and their Florida divorce attorneys are proactive in their approach, a case is usually completed in around three to four months from its inception.

If the Parties Are Unwilling to Settle, Make Sure You Have a Skilled Divorce Attorney

If the parties are not able to settle the case at mediation, and a trial in front of the judge is inevitable, the entire case may take up to a year or even 18 months, depending on the judge’s schedule and any backlogs. This is why you definitely need a law firm that employs a proactive approach and tries to resolve as many issues as possible with the other side, if possible, thereby narrowing the issues and reducing the overall cost of litigation.

At the same time, you want to make sure that you have a lawyer who possesses the requisite skillset and experience level to prove your case. Remember, not all attorneys are created equal. Therefore, it is critical that you retain an attorney who knows how to successfully bring your case to completion. Our law firm focuses on divorces and other family law matters throughout the State of Florida. If you would like to discuss any more issues with an attorney, please do not hesitate to call us.
